Pawnee Prairie Park

Parking is off of S Tyler Rd near Sedgwick County Recycling Info County Government Office

"Variety of plants and wildlife. The park has been designated as a Wichita Wild Habitat area and is the largest in the Wichita Park system. Park includes a five-mile marked trail in three connecting loops as well as many unmarked trails."

There is a dirt road that cuts through the Pawnee Prairie Park. The dirt road on one side is line with Osage Orange trees. It is a good example of the settlers using the Osage Orange trees as natural fencing to keep livestock in. The Osage Orange Tree: Useful and Historically Significant I have heard of the Osage Orange tree refered to as tangle wood and you can see that here.

The Osage Orange tree has a fruit that looks like a small, green brain. The fruit use to be considered a nuisance, but now has become a cash crop used in cosmetics. Iowa Chemist Turns Nuisance Fruit into Spendy Cosmetic Oil

If you go early morning or in the evening good chance of seeing wildlife. (deer, armadilo, coyote)

Herman Hill Park

Herman Hill is a small park along the Arkansas River in South Wichita. The park contains the Water Center. You can take tours: 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and other times by appointment. Call: 316-350-3386 or email: Cindy Le or Kay Drennem.

Herman Hill Park has several outdoor water fountains, a large aquarium with native Kansas fish and aquatic life, a stream, a small children's playground, a restroom, and a frisbee golf course. When I visited the outdoor aquarium looked like it needed some help.

Strataca Salt Mine Tour

3650 East Avenue G
Hutchinson, KS 67501
Phone: 620.662.1425
Toll Free: 866.755.3450

Tuesday - Saturday 9-6
Sunday 1-6

Tickets: Adults $19.00, Childern $12.50, Safari Ride an additonal $12.50.

This is probably not for everyone. Hutchinson is too far for you to be rescued by Heartspring if things go sideways. It is a little less than an hour drive from Heartspring. To go down into the mine, you are packed (I mean packed shoulder to shoulder) into an elevator in darkness for at least 90 minutes if you are loaded into the top part of the elevator. The bottom part of the elevator gets loaded first and off load last, as the people on the top get in last and out first. A staff member in the elevator does have a flash night if light is needed. Once underground the chambers are large, lighted and the ground is even. There is a 15 minutes long train ride, and a 20 minutes long tram ride included with your ticket. There is an additional hour long dark Safari tram ride through most of the old salt mine.

They say that the basic 2 ride ticket and walk through takes two hours. Most of the two hours is if you stop and read all the exhibits along the way. If you just walk through and take the rides, it is about an hour. They do not allow you to break up the rides and come up and say go to lunch and then go back down for the longer 1 hour ride. There are rest rooms below. No food beyond vending machines.

People will tell you to eat at the Carriage Crossing Restaurant, 10002 S Yoder Rd, Yoder, KS 67585 for the pies. You will see it on your way to the Strataca Salt Mine. This is real Amish cooking, so it is kind of an experience. The food is bland and the pies are just so-so. I ordered a roasted turkey sandwich. It was roasted turkey between two slices of bread. That is it. The turkey was really good and tasted like it had just come out of the oven.

Movie Theaters

Warren Theatres

A native of Wichita told me that she had been told that the movie theaters in Wichita were probably the best in the country. We went to the Warren Theatres and I told her she was right.
If you haven't been to a Warren Theatres, you will find out.

We went to this one
9150 W 21st St
Wichita, KS 67205
but they have various locations.

My son now never makes it beyond when the popcorn is gone and then he wants to go. It does not matter what movie. Most theaters will refund your ticket especially during the first part of the movie and Warren Theatres does that.

The Troll

"The Troll first appeared in May 2007, chained to some pipes beneath a large sidewalk grate near the Arkansas River. He was created by local sculptor Constance Ernatt, stands seven feet tall, and weighs 200 pounds -- although it's difficult to appreciate his size in his underground prison."

777 W. Central Ave.
Wichita, KS

"Along a walking path behind and just to the right of the old Westar power plant building, which is on the south side of W. Central Ave. on the east bank of the Arkansas River. Park in the lot behind the building, then walk to the right. You'll see the path and the big grate in it. The troll is visible beneath that grate, and also from the side, through a wall grate visible from another path that parallels the river. Both paths are part of a large trail system with its own cross-river bridges, so you can park in other places and simply walk over to the Troll."

We have tried a few hotels that were on the list Heartspring gave us and did not like them. Some hotels if you spend the same amount or ten dollars more you can get a better room and hotel elsewhere. Right now I am leaving out the many various we tried because I would to hear other people's experiences. I also want to get suggestions at various price ranges.
In general, the hotels near the airport are less expensive than the hotels near Heartspring but than you have the commute to Heartspring.
Unlike renting a car, in general it is cheaper to rent a hotel room the day before you go unless there is some big event going on.

"This is a good "bang for the buck" hotel fairly close to Heartspring. We have not tried all hotels near Heartspring. Kellogg road was recently redone with elevated roads and underpasses. "Small family run Italian restaurant. Moderately priced. Table cloths. Food was good. I would go again."

Where to eat on Christmas day and the other major holidays in Wichita, KS

Finding a place to eat can be tricky when traveling on a major holiday, especially Christmas. Most restaurants and grocery stores are closed on Christmas Day and to a lesser degree on Thanksgiving Day and Easter.

You can plan ahead and get groceries to eat and maybe cook if you have a kitchenette in your hotel room.

On Christmas Day, with few restaurants open, they will be packed. Ever had to wait in line to get into a Denny’s restaurant? You will on Christmas Day.

Here are the restaurants that are open on Christmas Day and other holidays:

Denny’s Restaurants

(There are 3 in Wichita.)
They are open 24 hours a day though can have shortened holiday times, but are usually open for breakfast and lunch.

Rental Car Advice

Avoid rental cars with license plates from California or Colorado or any state in which marijuana has been legalized in any way. There is a good chance that if a Kansas state trooper sees your car they will follow you, run your plates, and maybe pull you over.

We rented a car at the Wichita airport that had a CA license plate. A Kansas state trooper followed me several miles though I had done nothing wrong that I knew. It is not like we have any reason to speed when visiting our son in Wichita. We have a lot of time and nowhere to go that needs to be in a hurry. The state trooper did not pull us over and eventually just stopped following us.

When we had to drive our son from California to deliver him to Heartspring, we were followed in each state except for Texas. In Oklahoma, we even had a state trooper make a dusty U-turn over a neutral ground on the interstate. He followed us and even drove along side of us looking into our car. He did not pull us over and eventually went off an exit. A New Mexico state trooper followed us for a few miles to the Texas border.

I could not figure this out. I thought maybe it was political. I mentioned the above rental car incident to a waiter and he was the one that told me why I was being followed. He said since Colorado is right next to Kansas, the state troopers are on high alert for people moving marijuana across state lines.

I really do not like driving any rental cars in Kansas that do not have a Kansas license plate.
